The First Annual TCWUG 802.11b (WiFi) Distance Competition!!!
First Prize: 6 months free high-speed Internet access
The Rules:
- Using 802.11b WiFi equipment shoot a signal to the Pillsbury Tower in downtown Minneapolis and measure these stats:
- GPS coordinates of your position (including elevation)
- Latency
- Signal Strength
- Best time to download the 1-megabyte file located at: http://downloads.implex.net/test (You must maintain a minimum throughput of 128kbs)
- Post your results to the TCWUG mailing list (tcwug-list@tcwug.org) by Tuesday, September 7th, with subject line "Distance Competition Results"
- Ben will collect responses and post the name and GPS coordinates of the longest shot by Wednesday, September 8th.
- The winner will be crowned after they reproduce their results at the TCWUG meeting on Tuesday, September 14th, which will be held at the location of the longest shot.

The Details:
- The access point is located on top of the Pillsbury Tower (200 S. 6th Street, Minneapolis). The AP is a vertically-polarized dlink AP 1000 with a 12db gain omni-directional antenna. Elevation: 445 feet.
- Equipment to be used: No limit on what you can use (antennas, dishes, etc), but it should be legal!
- The final official GPS coordinates will be taken after a successful demonstration. Any challenges to distance, throughput, etc. must be made in-person the day of the meeting. (9/14).
- If the winner can't reproduce his/her results, the next closest entry will have the opportunity to demonstrate their results at the October meeting. We'll keep going until we have a winner.
- Any questions or clarifications will be answered by Ben, and will be final.
